Chamber tells Transport Secretary continued investment key for future prosperity

Yesterday the Chamber spelt out the key transport issues facing the region at a meeting with the Secretary of State for Transport, Lord Adonis.

Our group led by Chamber Chief Executive, Angie Robinson and the Chair of the Chamber’s Transport Committee, Miranda Allen, raised a variety of priorities including, the need for extra rail carriages on key rail commuter routes and the need to urgently address the limited capacity available for Northern Rail Services travelling through Manchester Piccadilly.

We also added our support for the need for a high-speed rail route through to Greater Manchester. In addition, we also stressed the importance of the need to look at improving trans-Pennine services connecting Manchester with key cities such as Leeds and Sheffield.

The meeting proved extremely productive and we were able to raise a variety of key transport issues with the minister. Transport infrastructure remains a vital driver for the future economic prosperity of the region, and we were keen to stress that transport budgets should not bear the brunt of any planned cuts in public spending. We will continue to liaise with a variety of groups and partners in the region to provide continued pressure for increased investment for our transport infrastructure.
