Ashton Market Hall wins Building of the Year

by Richard Critchley, Policy Manager for Planning

We held our Building and Development dinner last night, finally announcing our Building of the Year after weeks of speculation. Ashton Market Hall took the prize over a number of other worthy contenders, Number 1 The Avenue at Spinningfields, the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Bolton Market Shopping Centre.

The historic Market Hall was devastated by fire in the early hours of Tuesday 25th May, 2004. It reopened on Friday 28th November, 2008.

Steve Burne, chair of the Chamber's Building and Development section, had these words to say:

"The success of the Ashton Market Hall demonstrates the achievements of planners, construction professionals and local businesses working together to breathe new life into a building which sits at the centre of the local community.”

Congratulations to everyone involved.
